The worst thing that can happen on a farm is a barn fire. But that won't stop a local therapeutic horseback riding ranch from hosting an open house this Saturday on May 31 near Russell, PA. A May 16 fire

destroyed the main barn there but no one was hurt and all the horses are safe.

The ranch will hold its annual horse show on May 31 in its outdoor arena. It is located in rural north Warren County not far from Eisenhower High School. Turn leftup Thomspon Hill Road just before you reach the school on Route 957.

Events run from 11 a.m. through 6 p.m. Kids can watch barrel racing, egg racing on horseback and more fun activities sponsored by Double Rainbow. Weather forecast for the event is 76 degrees with slight chance of thunderstorms.

Don't leave shore without it: Canoeing Guide

Over_paddling_guideThis may be one of the most popular spots in the country for canoeing. Since 2003 the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry has hosted the United States Canoe Association national races every other year and since 2000 Warren has been the home of the annual Pennsylvania State Championship canoe races.

Livery services here rent canoes and transport vacationers to and from points of embarkment and pick them up downstream. The calm and flat waters created by the Kinzua Dam have made canoeing a regional perennial favorite.

Have you searched bookstores for maps and other information on the Allegheny River and come up empty handed? You’re not alone. Until recently, no guidebook on the Allegheny existed. Now one does. It’s called the Allegheny River Paddling Guide. And it floats.

The Paddling Guide clocks the upper 45 miles of the Allegheny, from Kinzua Dam to Tionesta, noting major landmarks, historical sites and where paddlers can stop for food, supplies, camping, hiking and more. Each feature is marked on a detailed map of the river that’s laid out consecutively over several pages. GPS coordinates are included for tech-savvy adventurers. Many sights are also captured in photos to help readers further identify what they're seeing as they paddle down the Allegheny. The book is 34 pages, spiral bound, and the size of a reporter’s notebook for easy storage. Every page is enclosed in a 5-mil lamination to make the entire book water resistant and, yes, it even floats.

The folks at two canoe liveries, Allegheny Outfitters and Allegheny Indian Waters, tried to write the Paddling Guide in a way that makes readers feel like they are on the river with them, showing them all the cool stuff in our back yard. In the introduction they explain that no one paid them to be included in the guide. “Our general rule of thumb when compiling it was to include as much objective information as possible, so you could check things out for yourself,” the intro says. “Where we have made suggestions – about books, restaurants, festivals – we’ve tried to be transparent and honest in our recommendations.”

If you are in the local area you can get a copy of the Paddling Guide in Warren at the Allegheny Book Mart, in Starbrick at Dreamboat Marina, and in Tidioute it is available at the Wildwood Inn and at the Trading Post. The book is also available now for immediate shipping from an online store.

Want to see more now? Here's more info on canoeing and kayaking the Allegheny River at the magazine version of this news blog.

In addition, for web sites which use photos, a direct link back to Allegheny Almanac (magazine version) or to Allegheny Almanac (blog version) is required. For material which is assigned to a specific photographer or writer, contact the editor for permission before using.

Recently, a photo of the Bent Run Waterfalls by Jon Holiday was used for the cover of the Warren County's tourist magazine. Mr. Holiday gladly donated his work and credit for the work was given to him inside the publication.  Wikipedia has published a photo by Chris Lareau at its Allegheny National Forest web page and an edited version of this photo has appeared at the Kinzua Country Tango Website. It is gratifying to the editor to be of use for such a worthy organization. The Warren Parks and Recreation Commission recently used three photographs by Chris Lareau for its Warren, Pennsylvania video. View photos: 1, 2, 3) The photographer is glad to be of service for such a worthy effort. For information on how photos can be used for little or no charge, e-mails should be directed to the editor of the web site.

The editor at Allegheny Almanac is glad to furnish these images so that the rest of the world can see how beautiful our area is and all of us can share in our good nature. It is hoped that many more photos from Allegheny Almanac will be seen in publications and throughout the internet. There are a great many more terrific shots at the website, according to the editor, who hopes as many people as possible can enjoy them.

The editor would love to hear from republishers of work that he has published to discuss ways of providing more intellectual property for their future and continued success.
